My Work
Locally News
An Android project by GiantKiwi
I had been given a project to design and create an android application which would compliment a news broadcasting website. Due to my own preferences for reading the latest news on the go, and the current lack of lightweight options on android to do so, I decided to develop a News Feed Reader Application.
Part of the brief required that at least some of the application had been written in Java, so I implemented this using an Android WebView to allow me to build a minisite, on a local directory on the phone itself in HTML5. This then allowed me to do all the visual elements in a mixture of HTML5, CSS and Javascript, which meant that it remained lightweight, and up to date in the current phone app market.

Attack of the Blue November
An HTML5 Canvas Game project by Devestation Games
Joshua Paul Lane - Project Manager
Siddharth Vadgama - Audiovisual Designer
Iain van Gardingen - Lead Programmer
Joss Webber - Research and Development
Craig Norman - Graphic Designer
We were given a project to design and create an HTML5 Canvas Game utilising Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG) elements as sprite entities.
We began by researching into previous games made using the HTML5 Canvas element as a game zone as well as looking into previous games developed for the web using alternative formats such as Java Embedded Games or Shockwave/Flash. Using this as a basis we started to look into possible directions to create a final solution.
In my role as Lead Programmer, my task was to create an environment in which the game itself could be enacted, then build all the given assets into a fully functioning game. The final product can be accessed by clicking on the image above.

Dome Project - Feuer
Designed and Rendered in 3D Studio Max, then it has been Composited using Adobe After Effects, where i've done post processing on the video and added an audio soundtrack which was an abridged version of Sonata Arctica's - Everything Fades to Gray (Instrumental Version) (they hold all copyrights to the song). Resolution 1400x1050. This video was made for coursework for IDAT211 - Reflexive Design for Stage 2 of my BSc (Hons) Digital Art and Technology degree.

TF2 Server Configurator
Based around the HL2 SRCDS, I have created an interface specifically tailored to teaching novice users the in’s and out’s of setting up Team Fortress 2 Gameservers, more specifically relating to the server config file.
The Server config is a file which has specific variables or “Settings” which are used to choose how the server will behave. Unfortunately, normally due to the complexity of said files, most server configs are incorrectly setup, and in some serious cases this can make it possible for malicious attacks on the server to take place. My Configurator is specifically designed to take the user through step by step, how to correctly arrange the settings, explaining in depth and in some occasions visually how the effect would be shown in how the server would run.
This isn’t it though, because this game is based on a specific engine which lots of other games also use it can also be rolled out universally for all associated games, just by making tailoring the content specifics to each relevant game, thus making it viable as a business model used to teach users correct use.
The final out come is to take the user from the complete novice user to the stage where they can make a config unassisted in the original plain text document.
After Effects, SRCDS.
RetroDefense
An Adobe Flash Game project by GiantKiwi
I had been given a project to design and create a flash game, which focused on advanced uses of actionscript in the development of the game.
After extensive research into other flash games, I decided to make a retro styled two dimensional shooter or similar. My preferred way of making things in Flash was to base the game solely around ActionScript, and for this I decided to use ActionScript 3 (AS3) as it was the most up to date which would allow me to create less complicated code which would make later debugging easier.
The game was entirely coded in AS3 where possible allowing for a fast loading game, which made it optimal for web use. For some areas of the game it proved impractical to implement it purely in actionscript and hence these where implemented as visual elements built from inside the software. The game consists of a stage which has its layout defined by an array and then all objects are sprites defined in AS3 code, all with a physics engine, self built, to correctly assess the trajectories of the ammunition. The original game took outside influence from the wind speed on top of a university building at Plymouth, however this has been disabled because of lack of a feed to connect to now.
